Caryn Stromberg loves painting people and is best known for her expressive, emotion evoking portraits. She often uses close-up or extreme perspective to allow viewers to step outside of their usual point of reference. Oil paint was her preferred medium until she joined a pastel portraiture class, where pastels grabbed her with their energy and immediacy. She fell in love with the chunky sticks of unctuous, saturated pigment that allowed her to loosen up and play with line and color. Pastel continues to be her primary medium of choice for portraits.
Caryn shows her award winning work in many venues including The Carter House Gallery and City Hall in Redding, and Highland Art Center and Main Street Gallery in Weaverville, CA. Her work has also been on display in The Old City Hall Gallery in Redding, Redding Regional Airport, Liberty Gallery in Yreka, CA and the UC Davis Womyn’s Center Gallery. Recently one of her pieces was selected for inclusion in the West Coast Biennial Art Exhibition at Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding.
Caryn began her post-secondary education as an art major at a small college in Idaho in 1971. Although she left after completing one year to marry and raise four children, she always managed to weave art into her busy life. Along the way she returned to college to complete a BA in Psychology at UC Davis, where she spent over 25 years working as an interpreter and counselor for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. In 2007, with her children grown, Caryn finally had the opportunity to return to her passion and began taking evening art classes at Sacramento City College. Now retired, she continues to further her skills by taking workshops and classes and participating in a local figure drawing group. In 2017 she became a member of Julia Kay’s Portrait Party, an online group of international portrait artists.
Caryn was born in St. George, Utah and grew up in Modesto, California. She currently lives in northern California.
